When it comes to coaching high school soccer, we must accept the fact that self-control is a choice just like confidence that players must make. In soccer coaching, self-control strategies are based on the relationship between thoughts and emotions. It is a known fact that our emotional state influences our feelings and as a result of it, our performance is strengthened.

You can aid your players in learning the skill and discipline of self-control with the 12 step strategy that I’m going to share with you. But make sure that your player’s only take these steps when they are sure of its value to them.

Also, players must be ready to take full accountability for their actions. The strategy has been given below in 12 steps for your reference.

1. Awareness: In coaching youth soccer, lend a helping hand to players in identifying their weak points. Help your players evaluate the reasons how, where and when they lost control on the ground in their past.

2. Understanding: Let the players find out and admit the reason that influenced their thoughts and resulted in them losing their emotional poise.

3. Differences: Allow them to go back in time and recall situations where they did not lose control and where they did. Let them gauge the difference in their attitudes, emotions, and behavior.

4. Problem: When it comes to coaching high school soccer, try to point out the real problem. For instance: It may be the guilty feeling in a player that he let the whole team down due to his acts.

5. Belief: The players should be taught to raise their expectations for themselves with self-control as one of the traits. Encourage them to change.

6. Reinforcement: Behavior change is accelerated by reinforcement. Being a coach, you need to appreciate the good changes in the players to ensure that these remain forever.

7. Goals: Start with multiple smaller goals, so that you can take your players along the path to changes. You need to make the players understand the link between actions, thoughts, and feelings.

8. Techniques: Build a series of behavioral techniques for maintaining confidence. For example: Course of action must be clear in the minds of players when a certain situation arises.

9. Plan: In football coaching, help the players in learning an organized and efficient way to pursue their goals.

10. Progress: Tell them to be patient. Let them understand the principle of gradual improvement including the ups and downs.

11. Setbacks: Train the players to accept that setbacks are bound to happen from time to time. So, the better is to use these to learn new ways to tackle these.

12. Remembrance: Last but an important point is to let the players identify the good reason behind the change. The players must always know that why and what are they doing. What would be there in future for them, if they don’t try?

We all agree that a perfect performance state for a soccer player is that of a relaxed promptness. It signifies the ability to use energy without any fear.

You must not make any mistake about it. Including relaxation techniques in coaching high school soccer and help players control their thinking so they can generate emotions that remove unnecessary tension and save energy.
